A Guide To Energy Self-Healing
What is energy healing?
Energy Healing is based on the understanding that within our body flows a subtle “life-force-energy” which causes us to be alive and is the source of our vitality. When this energy is strong and flowing smoothly it manifests as good health and wellbeing, whereas when it is depleted or disrupted we are more likely to suffer ill-health and low mood.
Acupuncture, Shiatsu, Tai-Chi, Ayurveda and Yoga all share this same basic idea with Energy Healing.
The aim of all these practices is to foster health and wellbeing by increasing the amount of life-force-energy in a person’s system, harmonising that energy within the system, and dissolving energetic blockages.
Treatments vs self-healing
If we are new to energy healing or suffering from an issue and would like energetic support, it makes a lot of sense to turn to an experienced practitioner to receive some treatments. Such practitioners can act as a conduit to allow the infinite source energy to flow into our system and replenish our own, bringing us back towards wellness and vitality.
This is a very beautiful gift we can give to ourselves.
Treatments are deliciously relaxing, often full of radiant peace, an exquisite sense of deep wellbeing and security, and the feeling of being brought into contact with the source of divine love.
Such experiences are deeply nourishing on all levels—physical, emotional, mental and spiritual.
As the divine energy flows into us, boosting our subtle energy system and increasing our vitality, it also helps to clear away trapped negative energy, as well as negative attitudes and emotions. This can leave us feeling re-vitalised and renewed, cleansed and full of hope—a feeling which can sometimes last for days or even weeks. Many people report significant improvements to their overall health and sometimes even miraculous recovery from serious illnesses after only a few sessions.
However, for most people, unless treatments are supported by a corresponding shift in lifestyle and outlook, the chances are that whatever improvements are felt during and after Energy Healing will eventually fade and we will return to our previous state of imbalance.
This is because the deep energetic patterns which are at the root of our manifest issues in life are not usually addressed or transformed through one or even a series of treatments.
In order to see lasting results we need to take an active responsibility for our own healing, and to see our whole lives as creating the conditions for health or its absence. Only in this way can we been to work with the underlying patterns which create our experiences in life.
Energy self-healing involves accessing the unlimited reservoir of universal divine energy for ourselves and opening to that energy on a regular basis, as well as consciously living in alignment with natural spiritual principles.
These two aspects of self-healing support each other beautifully. For the more we fill ourselves with the divine energy the easier and more natural it becomes to make choices that are in alignment with the deep flow of life. And the more we are able to make such choices the more naturally open we become to the divine energy.
So, receiving Energy Healing treatments can be a powerful way to begin our self-healing journey: offering support through particularly difficult times, providing an influx of positive energy to help move us forward and inspire us to make some shifts in our lives, and giving us a delicious taste of the light we can open to through our own efforts.
But at some point we will want to learn to access that light directly through our own conscious intention.
Looking after our body’s subtle energy system is as vital to our health and wellbeing as exercise and diet are. It also happens to be very simple to do.
This guide is a basic introduction to working with the subtle energy of your body and of the universe around you, to help keep your energy grounded, clear and flowing.
Part One is an outline of what energy healing is about.
Part Two comprises 7 simple energy self-healing techniques to experiment with, which combine into one short and powerful daily practice for you to take away.
Part One: Energy Healing
Everything is energy
Consider this for a moment:
Everything that you are and everything around you is energy—vibrating, pulsing, shimmering energy.
It’s not that things are made of energy, but rather everything simply is energy.
The apparent solidity of things is a sort of optical illusion of the mind, as is the apparent separation between things.
In reality, everything, including ourselves, exists as part of one single unified energetic field extending as far as the edges of the universe and beyond.
And this energetic field is the direct emanation of the more subtle field of consciousness that is Source.
Energy healing is, at the deepest level, about helping us to experience this reality directly within the temple of our own being.
So energy healing is about rediscovering ourselves to be a complex interwoven field of energies emanating directly from Source Consciousness.
Between that Source Consciousness and our everyday experience of ourselves, our body and our world there is essentially no separation, only different layers of energy vibrating at different frequencies.
But within these different layers we find various blockages which prevent energy flowing smoothly through us from its origin.
It is these blockages which create the illusion of a world of separation and solid objects that we normally take to be reality, and which also manifest as forms of illness and dis-ease—physical, emotional, mental and spiritual.
Energy healing aims to dissolve these blockages, allowing the energy emanating from Source to flow smoothly through our lives. As it is allowed to do so, illness and other problems can disperse and our beings become filled with more light and Consciousness.
The human as an energy system
The sense of separation from source is, ultimately, the fundamental cause of all illness and dis-ease in our lives and our world.
It is essentially this separation that energy healing seeks to dissolve. But to do so often requires a gradual process of clearing and releasing more specific blocks, addressing the underlying causes of particular imbalances and disharmonies in our lives.
This gradual process involves working with the various layers of our human energy system.
Different disciplines describe the human energy system in slightly different ways, but most agree on the following basic outline:
At the densest frequency is our flesh-and-blood physical body, which is energy condensed into its most solid form.
Next is the energy of our life-force (prana or chi), which flows through subtle channels sometimes called meridians. This energy communicates directly with our physical body and is that out of which the various tissues of our physical bodies are actually formed.
More subtle is the level of energy sometimes called our aura. This is the layer which contains our chakra system and which holds the various patterns (acquired during this and other lives) that are currently determining the flow of our life-force through its subtle pathways.
Interwoven through the above layers, effecting and being effected by each, are our emotional and mental bodies.
Beyond all this is the astral layer, which holds the very subtle energetic imprints of the individual experiences we have had and will have throughout all our lives, from which are formed the patterns held in our auras and translated into our energy flows and our physical bodies.
More subtile still is the divine template of our soul, the deep and extremely fine vibrational structure which itself creates our experiences on our journey through time and space. This is the highest level of individuality.
Beyond are the celestial realms of angelic consciousness, and beyond these the causal level of absolute consciousness itself.
As human beings we contain and embody this full spectrum of energies. All of these levels are present and operational in us at all times. None of them need to be acquired or developed. We only need to open to them, release the blocks contained within them, and allow the energy to flow smoothly through them.
Like any other form of healing, energy healing can help with relieving the symptoms of particular ailments and illnesses, returning the individual to normal functioning.
Many people go to energy healers for this kind of treatment, which can take place either in person or remotely at any distance.
Such treatments usually take place at the level of the aura.
The energy healer acts as a conduit for clear light energy to flow freely into the recipient’s auric field directly from source. It is a little bit like pouring a flow of clean water into a glass of cloudy water so that the clean water eventually displaces the cloudy.
In this way energetic blockages can be dispersed, negative energy can be removed, the energy centres can be re-balanced and life-force can flow more smoothly through its subtle pathways.
By working at this level, the physical, mental and emotional bodies are all positively affected, and recipients often feel lighter, more relaxed, clearer and brighter after receiving this kind of treatment.
Over time, chronic physical illness and long-standing life-issues can be cleared through this kind of energy healing, as the repeated cleansing and strengthening of the auric field of the recipient gradually addresses the underlying energetic blocks, imbalances and deficiencies which were manifesting as illness and issues.
More advanced energy healing is possible though. This involves working at the deeper levels of the energy system as described above.
Some healing techniques work directly at the astral level, for example, clearing the the subtle energetic imprints held there. This deep work addresses the causes of the patterns held in our auric field, actually removing the energetic imprints which were causing these patterns and thereby resetting the rest of our energy system all the way up to the physical. This is very powerful healing.
Other techniques work directly at soul level, but this level of healing is very rare.
The depth at which en energy healer can work with a recipient depends on the amount of clearing the healer has done on their own energy system—how connected they are to their true self that is Source.
Energy healing as spiritual practice
Ultimately, we are all our own energy healers. Or rather, the only real energy healer is Source. This is not to say that we cannot receive healing and support through other people, but ultimately all energy emanates from Source Consciousness and we ourselves can learn to access that energy directly.
At the deepest level, energy healing is the journey of accessing Source Consciousness directly. This is a process of remembering and connecting to the energy of our Multidimensional Self, of opening to the full spectrum of who we are and living our lives from a connection to the divine.
In this process we open and clear the pathways through which energy flows through all the levels our beings, healing and harmonising the whole of our lives and dissolving the sense of separation and the various subtle blocks of which this sense separation is made.
At this level energy healing is not something that anyone else can do for us, but our own journey of aligning with what is, of allowing our true selves to shine through the apparent denseness of physical reality, and sharing our light with each other so that we can all raise our consciousness through the remembrance of who we are.
As we do so we move closer to the divinity that we are.
Part Two: Seven simple energy healing practices
Words and ideas can only take us so far. The only way to really understand what energy healing is is through experience.
Here are seven safe and easy techniques that, if practiced regularly, will keep your energy grounded, clear, and flowing.
They will also help to bring your energy into alignment with the earth and the universe, which creates a positive flow that allows the attraction of positivity and positive experiences in your life.
Altogether they take under 10 minutes to do.
1. Breathing into your heart
Sitting or standing or lying down, place a hand on the centre of your chest. Take a moment to feel your heart beating. Then imagine that you are breathing in and out of the area of your heart. Visualise the air passing in and out through your chest. Thoughts will come along but try to just keep gently focused on breathing into your heart. Do this for about a minute, or longer if you wish.
Over time this practice will gradually bring your energy down from the thinking centre in your head and into the feeling centre of your heart.
2. Belly breathing
This isn’t a visualisation. It’s a physical practice. Sitting or standing or lying down, simply begin to breathe with your belly. Let your chest be passive, and instead use your belly to draw in and push out the air. Let your belly fill and rise with each in-breath, and feel it fall and contract with each out-breath. Remember not to use your chest much at all in the breathing process, but let the belly do the work. You could place one hand on your belly, feeling it rise and fall, and the other hand on your chest, hopefully not feeling much movement there. Do this for a minute or more if you wish.
Over time this practice will deepen your breathing and allow more oxygen into your system. It will also help to relax your whole body so that your energy can flow more smoothly. It will also bring your energy down from your upper energy centres into the lower, more grounded centres.
3. Energy grounding
Standing or sitting with your feet flat on the ground, shoes on or off, inside our outside. Feel the connection between the soles of your feet and the ground beneath. Feel the solidity of the ground below, feel it supporting your feet and your whole body. Feel the weight of your body pressing down into your feet. Bring your awareness as fully as possible into the soles of your feet and really feel the contact between your feet and whatever it is they are standing on. Do this for a minute or however long you feel to.
Our feet connect us to the earth. By bringing our awareness into the soles of our feet we ground our body’s energy into the vast field of the earth’s energy, and open to let the nourishing energy of the earth flow into our body.
4. Connecting to the universe
Similar to grounding down into the earth, this practice is for grounding up and out into the energy of the universe.
Bring your awareness back into your heart by breathing into your heart. Then bring to mind anything or anyone that you have love for or that brings you joy. Feel that love in your heart, warm and generous. From there, visualise as best you can the vast space of the universe up above your head and all around you. Feel out with your heart into that space, up through the top of your head and out as far as you can go into the depths of the universe. Then imagine a pure, bright, golden energy above you, a light or a presence shining deep in the heart of the universe. Feel the radiance of that light and reach out to it with the energy of your heart, allowing it to pour down through the top of your head into your whole body. Feel the love of the universe flow into you. Do this for a couple of minutes, or for however long you have time.
It may take a few tries to get used to this practice, but opening to the vastness of the universal energy in this way and connecting to it with a loving heart is a deeply nourishing thing to do. Regular practice develops our conscious relationship with the universe, grounding us into the deep holding of that relationship.
5. Energy awareness and Self-healing
This practice is to help you start to get attuned to your own subtle energy. It’s very simple and can be quite an eye-opener to realise how easy it is to feel energy flow.
Begin by holding your hands out in front of you and rubbing them together until you feel the friction and heat building up. This will activate the energy centres in the hands. Then after 20 seconds or so stop rubbing and hold your hands an inch or two apart. Feel the energy between your palms, a bit like static electricity. You might feel that you hands want to move or rotate a little, or not. Either way, focus on feeling the energy between your hands.
Now, you can actually choose to intentionally funnel energy into the space between your palms. Give it a try. Feel the energy build between your palms for a while.
And there it is. It’s that easy to get in touch with your subtle energy and begin to move that energy with the power of your intention.
6. Slowing down
This is a very simple and light exercise to help you manage your energy when you’ve been racing around. The practice of self-mastery is about getting really good at being able to return to centre after having been off-balance. This exercise is great at bringing you back.
Just close your eyes and imagine that you’re driving a car very fast along a motorway. Really feel the speed and see the ground racing by in the eye of your mind. Then imagine that you firmly apply the brake and feel the car slow down. Try to feel the slowing down as vividly as possible in your body.
The more you practice this simple exercise, the easier and easier you’ll find it to slow your energy down whenever you notice it speeding. In time you won’t need to use the visualisation, it will be enough to notice the speeding and to create the intention to slow down.
7. Clearing your energy
Use this simple technique anytime and anywhere to clear your energy field of disturbances and negativity.
Visualise a shower of golden white light pouring down over you. Imagine that the light coming from a pure source and bathing your whole body. Now tell yourself that this shower of light is dissolving all negativity and disturbances in your energy field. Visualise whatever in your energy field that is not in your highest good being washed away. Now visualise your energy field shining pure and clear around you, whole and bright.
One minute is enough to do this practice. If regularly practiced it will keep your energy field clear and your sense of your own energy strong.
Doing these few easy practices every day or even every other day will quickly make a big difference to your subtle energy system.
You’ll find your energy is more clear, grounded and centred. You’ll also find yourself more naturally aware of your subtle energy, allowing you to be more sensitive to the state of your energy system from moment to moment.
This sensitivity is key to being able to manage your energy system and bring it back into balance when it becomes disturbed or ungrounded.
Western medicine and philosophy have largely ignored the subtle body. But it is there, and looking after it can improve the quality of our experience enormously.
One more practice I’d like to share with you before finishing is how to clear negative energy in your home.
This is really just an adaptation of the previous technique, but this time using your intention to clear negative energy in your external environment in addition to that in your subtle body.
8. Clearing negative energy in your home
This simple practice helps to clear away negative energy in your environment and replace it with love and light energy. It’s really just a shift in mindset that can be applied as you go about your normal everyday cleaning tasks, and can be further adapted to any number of situations.
Simply create the intention in your mind that while you perform any physical act of cleaning you are also clearing the more subtle energy of your space. Then while doing the hoovering or washing up or whatever it is, keep that intention in your awareness. It is the intention that is key. You can imagine and visualise that the denser energy in your space is being actively cleared away through the power of your intention coupled with the physical act of cleaning.
This shift in mindset is all that is needed for you to start rapidly clearing the energy of your space. And with the clearing and uplifting of that space you will find that your own energy field becomes clearer and brighter too.
Do this for a week or two and you are sure to feel the difference in both your environment and your energy body.
If you practice the techniques described above you will notice an improvement in your sense of well-being, your clarity and focus, and in your ability to remain centred and present.
Like everything, you get as much out as you put in.
But becoming sensitive to energy and developing a daily practice to clear and refresh your energy body is only the first step.
Energy work is deep. As we have seen, the journey of working with energy also has the potential to lead into realms of spiritual awakening.
As your energy body awakens you start to experience the world around you more and more as energy. Life becomes more and more magical.
